Sunday Geek Project: The Contenders and Setup

Here are the different GPS Modules I’m playing with or plan to play with:

• Currently Have:
  • Adafruit Ultimate GPS HAT
  • SparkFun Venus GPS with SMA Connector
  • Gowoops U-blox NEO-6M 25 x 25mm GPS Module with TTL Ceramic Passive Antenna For Raspberry Pi 2 B+
• Plan to get:
  • SparkFun GPS Module – Copernicus II DIP
  • Uptronics Raspberry Pi+ GPS Expansion Board

The testing platform for each module consists of:

• Raspberry PI 2 (running the latest firmware and Raspbian Jessie)
• CanaKit 5V 2.5A Raspberry Pi 3 Power Supply / Adapter / Charger (UL Listed)
• Raspberry Pi B+ / Pi 2 / Pi 3 Black Enclosure
• Waterproof GPS Active Antenna 28dB Gain
• For the GPS modules that are not HATs:
  • Assembled Pi Cobbler Plus – Breakout Cable – for Pi B+/A+/Pi 2/Pi 3
  • Full sized breadboard

For data collection I’ll be using:

• Raspberry PI 3 (running Raspbian Jessie)
• WD PiDrive 1TB Kit
• WD PiDrive Enclosure Kit

I plan to use Cacti to collect and present data.
